We are an open initiative of people interested in ethical and responsible approaches to research and development of technologies, especially in the area of artificial intelligence. Our aim is to educate ourselves through a series of discussions on interdisciplinary topics, such as AI ethics, safety, and regulation.
We want to participate in shaping the AI research ecosystem toward more responsible approaches, taking into account the societal implications that come with many AI applications. However, we also recognize that many of the mentioned topics are outside our technological expertise. Thus, to achieve a positive impact, we are actively seeking advice from experts from other domains interacting with AI, such as philosophers, ethicists, and social scientists.
What we do
Most of what we do happens in person, at the Czech Technical University, Faculty of Electrical Engineering, at Charles Square 13 in Prague. We host talks by invited speakers from inside and outside the university, we run workshops, and every second week we meet over coffee to discuss whatever is currently on our minds — a paper someone read, a piece of regulation, or a problem from someone’s own research. The events are public and there is nothing to prepare beforehand.
We also take these conversations outside the faculty. Over the past years we have discussed Responsible AI at academic conferences, at open days and public festivals, and with educators and NGO workers from across Europe. Much of it comes back to the same handful of questions: when can we trust an AI system, who gets to decide what it optimizes for, and what a useful explanation of its decisions actually looks like.
Everything we have run so far, and whatever is coming up next, is listed on our events page.
Get involved
The initiative is open to researchers, practitioners and students alike, whether you already work on the topic or have so far only been thinking about it. A large part of the point is simply that people working on closely related questions in Prague get to know about each other.
The easiest way to keep track is our mailing list, where we announce upcoming events. If you would like to give a talk, suggest a topic, or just ask a question, write to us at responsible-ai@fel.cvut.cz or get in touch with any of the people below.
